The sun was low in the sky, casting long shadows in its fading amber light. The faculty had gone home hours ago, and the custodial shift was wrapping up for the evening. Soon, the only breathing souls on campus would be university security guards, the rats living under Dwyer auditorium, and Red.

Red was a nuclear researcher. The nights were free from the heat and noise (and prying eyes) of the day, and gave him time to run his experiments on the university’s reactor.
