Community vs the Machine (written by Allison)

DDR Nonfiction Edition, pt. 2

Sometimes I simulate conversations with people, mainly to myself, just in my own head. I was up late one night a couple weeks ago and imagined saying this to someone I wish I could have better understanding with.

I’ve realized that, while this isn’t a game for me, it is quite the exercise. And I say that as someone who enjoys exercise.

I’m getting to lean on the levers of power in ways I had only dreamed of, to try and do real good for people. It’s still in the most powerless way possible; I mean, you still hold all the cards here, you have access to a machine big enough to crush me, one which is complex and fortified enough that I’ll never have access to the kind of capability you enjoy.

But even though there are real stakes to what I’m pursuing, I’m not stressed about it. I’m realizing more and more that we don’t need the government. And I don’t need you: I don’t need to bring you along with me to get to the ends I desire.

…but I still really would like to. Please, let’s get lunch again. Or I’m sure you attend some kind of fancy supper club now and then— have I told you I dance?
